1 starDo not use them for your business. They have the worst customer service I have ever experienced. I received a $1,000 bill for ? nothing. I asked them to tell me what it was for and they never responded, then I went ahead and emailed them telling them I couldn't believe the horrible service I was receiving, in return, I get an automated message back saying my message went to an unmonitored mailbox when I emailed my "service manager" directly. They will cut you off and make it impossible to find a solution for the problems they caused. They set up my sales and tax integration incorrectly and now I have a report I can't use. ********. I will make sure, I leave a review in every single platform I find to make people aware of your horrible service.Review fromNat K

Avalara provides no way to cancel your "subscription" online creating an unnecessary obstacle. They switched our billing from month-to-month to Annual without my knowledge or consent. They have increased our pricing from $170 to $245 per month within 2 years with no added states, no additional revenue, no additional complexities. They just decided on top of the service charge to charge just for connecting to our big commerce store and for connecting to our re-billing App. When I requested to cancel my account to our ******************** Manager Feb 14, 2025 as well as opening a case on Avalara's website to cancel my "subscription" immediately I was ignored until after the renewal date of Feb 16th. Feb 17th they told me I have to fill out a form to cancel via an email to my personal email that I don't check as often. When I called on Feb 18th to see why I haven't heard anything and confirm that my account was closed, they notified me of the Feb 17th email to my personal email with the form link to fill out. I filled out the form to cancel and was notified that the request has been processed and they will close my account August 17th, 2025 (IN 6 MONTHS). Then two days later they invoice me the monthly invoice on top of the annual invoice they already pulled from my account (double billing me - the second time I have been double billed by Avalara). I'm already starting communication with our legal team and am blown away how terrible the customer service has been. They may be violating Utah law (HB 174) on top of just being a terrible company to work with. I have had other issues with their sales tax reports and rates being inaccurate and improperly setup and it took months to resolve just so I could pull an accurate sales tax report and charge everyone that should be charged sales tax and report the correct amount (We only collect in 2 states). It has been nothing short of a nightmare working with Avalara.Avalara Inc

I am filing this complaint against Avalara Tax due to their deceptive auto-renewal and cancellation practices.I paid in full for my final yearly tax filing and explicitly requested that no further services be billed after that filing was completed. Despite this, Avalara is refusing to cancel my account and is now demanding an additional $250+ for services I do not want and never agreed to renew.Avalara claims I am locked into another year of service until November 2025, conveniently just before my next state tax filing would be due in Decemberensuring they can force another charge on me before I can even attempt to leave. Their justification? A digitally signed contract from 2022 that they falsely claim allows them to auto-renew without my explicit consent.Their cancellation process is deliberately confusing and obstructive. They require cancellation through their website, yet the system provides no confirmation that the request is finalized, leaving customers in limbo while they continue to bill them.Their support team has been dismissive and unprofessional, sending taunting emails instead of resolving the issue. This is a predatory and fraudulent business modelforcing customers into additional fees by making it nearly impossible to cancel.I demand that Avalara immediately cancel my account, cease all future billing, and remove any outstanding balance for services I never agreed to continue.I urge the BBB to investigate their unethical billing practices and hold them accountable for these deceptive policies.Avalara Inc

Hi *****, thank you for giving us the opportunity to look into this matter. We understand how unexpected costs would be upsetting, and we apologize if the cancellation process was not as clear as expected. To help avoid any confusion, Avalaras terms allow customers to submit a written notice of cancellation. However, after a thorough review, our team was unable to find any record of such a request. As a result, we must adhere to the agreed-upon Terms and Conditions, which include automatic contract renewal unless a cancellation request is submitted prior to renewal. We appreciate your feedback and are always looking for ways to improve the customer experience.Review fromJeff

Signed up with Avalara and the tool never worked reliably with Intuit Quickbooks (QB). We had deep dive meetings with their (very thin) tech support team, and after several meetings they suggested that WE reach out to QB for help. You know what ** told us: they said this is a well known issue and they cant help, talk to Avalara (Which of course is what we'd been doing for weeks)! Avalara took my money knowing their software isn't compatible with QB. I send Avalara their cancel form and they told me they would cancel my contract after one year and would continue to charge my credit card! UNBELIEVABLE! It's easy to understand why there are so many unhappy clients and so many 1* reviews. YOUR SW DOESNT WORK WITH **, YOU KNEW THIS WHEN YOU SIGNED MY COMPANY UP, WHERE IS MY REFUND????Avalara Inc

No one has been in contact with me in an official capacity. All I get is your email form letters stating you will continue to charge my card for one year despite the software never working. My attorney is telling me to SUE you for the amount you took from me plus damages, and that I will easily win.Review fromShawn W

Worst customer service imaginable! I manage a business and we have been using avalara for tax calculation and filing for a couple of years. When it's time to renew your service it's real easy to get schedule a zoom call but as soon as that's over they won't help you with even the simplest things. They leave you completely on your own to figure out all the integrations and registrations. That's bad enough but they recently tried to re-bill me for last year's service period, which I paid a year ago. It took a month of emails to get them to realize or acknowledge the error. When they finally did, instead of voiding the extra invoice, they kept that open but applied my previous invoice payment as a credit. The problem with that is that they are billing last year's services at this year's rates, which is about 30% higher that the rates for services I already paid! This equates to almost $3,000. Imagine if you bought a car for $10,000 then a year later the dealer sends you a bill for $3,000 because this year that same car is $13,000. That's essentially what this crooks are trying to do. There is currently a class action lawsuit filed against Avalara, for over 8 billion dollars, for misleading investors. After reading the countless reviews here and on yelp I will be surprised if another class action lawsuit for defrauding their customers doesn't happen soon. If so, I plan on being a part of it.Avalara Inc

Started a cancellation request in July 2024 and received a call from their sales team regarding the cancellation. They instructed me to reach out to my bank to block payments on avalara transactions "just in case I get charged." Did not sit right with me that, this was the information being given to me rather than removing all data or account information upon cancellation request. I then tried to reach out to an email regarding a missed payment and when sending an email, i received a notice that their mailbox was full and not accepting messages. Today Oct 2024 I received a second failed payment notice, so obviously they did not cancel my subscription. Will not recommend using any of their services or subscriptions.Avalara Inc

NO stars! The overall sales and account management experience has been more than lacking. We've been asking for a sales tax refund of $367.19 for 3 months, to no avail. The current issue regarding the address and tax charges is completely unacceptable. What kind of operation changes a clients address without proper verification, especially after billing since 2016? Their leadership should be embarrassednot just for the mistake, but for the unnecessary waste of time this has caused. A simple matter like this should have been handled swiftly, without dragging the client into internal procedural problems.Additionally, weve had no consistency in account management. We havent had the same account manager year over year, which results in a lack of continuity and causes issues like this. As a business-to-business sales organization effective ****************** and Customer Success are critical to preventing churn. After experiencing this issue, along with many others, believe me, if there were a viable alternative for us, wed switch in a heartbeat.Avalara Inc

Avalara is a scam. Don't use them as a company! I have shut my company down a year ago but yet for some reason they still charged me and said my account was never shut down. Due to me shutting that company down I no longer have access to my email and cannot prove that I have an email from them saying that my avalara account was canceled. So now I have to pay for it even though that business has been shut down for a year! Stay far away from this company.Avalara Inc

I cannot express enough how disappointed and frustrated we are with Avalaras services. Since integrating Avalara with our WooCommerce website, we have faced nothing but problems, costing us tens of thousands of dollars and an enormous amount of time and resources. From the start, we encountered a serious issue with duplicate transactions being submitted. After a month of back-and-forth with their support, it was finally determined that the problem stemmed from the way Avalara guided us to set up our account. This mistake doubled our tax filings, and weve been fighting to fix it ever since. Despite resolving the issue once, a July update from Avalara reactivated the problem without our consent, leading to more duplicate transactions and locked data, which we cannot correct. On top of that, weve dealt with Avalaras unreliable support system, where we cant even log in to get help. Our attempts to reset the password fail, and the page often doesnt load. This is unacceptable for a service weve paid tens of thousands of dollars for..Worst of all, in early April, Avalaras AvaTax plugin caused our customers to be unable to check out on our website. We were left with no choice but to disable the plugin, which meant we couldnt collect sales tax for two months. Despite repeated promises of a quick fix, it took until mid-June to resolve, causing significant financial ********* summary, Avalara has been a nightmare to work with. We are dealing with multiple unresolved issues that are directly Avalaras fault, and their poor communication and lack of support have only made things worse. Weve wasted an incredible amount of money trying to make their system work, and unless they take immediate action and issue a refund, we will be looking for alternative solutions. If youre considering Avalara for your business, think twice. Our experience has been nothing short of a disaster.Avalara Inc
