Prior to my time working for Daniels, I was a customer. My partner and family and I regularly ate at Daniels. When I saw they needed a manager, I was eager to apply. I have been in food service and food service management for ten years, so I do understand how restaurants work. However, I also have an extensive education in employment law, and it was clear that management broke laws and put employee well-being on the back burner. It is illegal to take tips from servers, for example, when a customer dines and dashes. And yet that occurred at Daniels. It is illegal to take money from TIPS when the till is short, and yet, it was done. Management regularly threatened to fire employees for simple mistakes, however, the owner refused to offer living wages and benefits. If youre only offering $7.25/hr with ZERO benefits, youre only going to be able to hire high school kids. And then youre terrorizing these high school kids for making mistakes when your business is operated by 15 and 16 year-old kids! If you want perfection, offer living wages and benefits, and hire fewer employees FULL TIME who actually care! Full time ADULTS who have actual stakes in holding a job, who can pay their bills and have health insurance, would perform to the standards being set by the owner. As it is, the owner requires perfection from everyone except himself (and a few employees he favors and regularly gives free food, against company policy). As a manager, I was expected after a mere few weeks to exhibit behaviors the owner and other members of management did not exhibit themselves. Of course when it appeared I may leave, the owner was quick to tell me how valued I was. As soon as I relaxed and further committed, that value went down the drain. There is a reason why this restaurant cannot keep managers. There is a reason why the owner drives an electric mustang and blows up the group chat overnight about a $7 slice of cheesecake that is missing. He is greedy, and selfish.
