This storage provider ("Chuck It In Storage") uses a deceptive practice in renting monthly storage units. I rented a 10' x 10' storage unit for $150 ($120 rent + $30 "setup and cleaning fee") on 11-1-2022. Today I attempted to close the storage unit account as I no longer need the unit (I only needed it for a few weeks). Their website requires me to give 30 days notice to vacate the unit, which essentially means I have to pay $120 for an additional month of unused storage. There is literally no way to rent the unit for one month only, you would have to give the notice to vacate the unit on the day that you rented it. This is not made explicit on the website, it only becomes obvious when you try to leave. It is made to appear to be a "one-month rental" in the receipt, but the 30-day written notice requirement is listed as point 12 in the Rental Agreement in the list of rules. Had I paid close attention to this I would not have rented here. I feel this is deliberately unnecessary (why does it take 30 days to terminate a monthly lease on a simple sheet metal garage on a concrete slab?), and designed to gouge the renter for an extra month's rent when they are ready to leave. I have rented storage units from several other providers, and nobody else requires a 30-day notice to leave the storage unit. Other storage providers allow the renter to leave up to the day before the next month's billing period begins. It is NOT like renting an apartment, it is more like renting a motel room for a night. I am attempting to give five days notice (it is currently day 25 on a 30-day lease). I am unable to do this through their website (it defaults to a date in the next month which would require me to pay the $120 for the next month's rent). I have emailed them yesterday but have not received a response, but it is a weekend. My hope is to alert other customers. Basically they want to charge everyone an extra month's rent after they move out. Thanks for reading.

    Business Response

    Date: 11/29/2022

We contacted the renter immediately and apologized for the confusion.  We allowed him to terminate his lease at any time they desired.  They wished to move out at the end of November and we granted them that wish without penalty.  We then changed the language in our rental agreement to allow just a 7 day notice of move-out.  We ended the lease on very good terms with the tenant.  We did not charge him any extra rent other than what was due for his one month stay.  Customer service is at the top of our list of priorities and we will do all that is necessary to help and serve our customers to the best of our abilities.

    Thanks,

    ****, Manager
