I maintain Linux systems. This includes remotely installing utilities on them. These remote systems are used for embedded hardware development. Some of these development stations have an expensive Segger JLink programmer hooked up to them and the embedded device.Despite the amount of money I have spent for the JLink units, I still cannot download the software for them directly. I have to download the file myself, host it myself, and download it from my hosted location. This is 2024 and I should not need to do that when Segger has it available for download on the internet, however copying the link and pasting it to the linux systems results in an **** file being downloaded with the wrong file extension and not the ****** *.tgz, or any other useful format. The **** file is not what the link represents and this comes across as fraud to me. I am an end user and my experience with their website makes me wish someone else had a comparable product that I could use instead. The explicit file should download, not a landing page that I can do nothing with on the headless development system. My time keeps being wasted every time I need to reinstall an environment that needs a JLink and it sincerely bothers me an embedded hardware/software company appears to not use "wget" at all or completely ignores its utility as it is used in a lot of projects and guides for installations.

I received a response from them asking me to put in a support ticket about their server issue.

    Business Response

    Date: 11/22/2024

    Hello,

We have reviewed this report here and have the following response.  We have a record of **** ****** contacting us via a general inquiry web form found on our website (******************************).  I have attached his original inquiry along with our response.  As can be seen, he was asked to open a support ticket to see if this is something our team could address on his behalf.  However; we never received the technical support inquiry as requested.

He does not need to contact support at this time as I was able to speak with the appropriate individuals here at SEGGER.  In reviewing his complaint, we believe we understand what he is doing wrong, but it is not an issue on our side.  It seems more like a working environment issue on his end.  He would like to use wget to access our J-Link Linux software installer.  We do not support wget as he has noticed.  We do not have plans to support wget on our website.  This is not a requirement to obtain our software.  He should visit the website and download the needed software component as he has reported he has done already.

On a side note; we have not received any other customer requests for use of wget and we have not had reports of customers having access issues to our software installers.

If **** ****** would like to discuss this in more detail, I am available at the contact information found below.

Please note; I will be out of the office on Monday the 25th.  I return to the office on the 26th.

    Best regards,
    ***** *****

I am rejecting this response because: Not allowing the use of wget to retrieve necessary and required files considering the nature of your products sounds like you do not care about the users of your product, but only the corporate entities that funnel you lots of money.

Not everyone develops in a graphical environment and I should not be forced to use one solely to grab files that others specify by URL.  ****** does not have this issue and there are tons of code bases there that reference your product being in use.  A product commonly used for developing embedded devices which are most often headless and lack a graphical user interface!!!

    Sincerely,
    **** ******
