I had One hour heating and air conditioning out on 5/1/24 to check my central AC that didn't seem to work properly. **** spent a couple hours here looking at things and diagnosed a bad valve that had allowed most or all refrigerant to leak out. He told us that since most ACs have only a one year warranty, and he didn't know if the compressor had been ruined by running it dry, my only option was to buy a replacement outside unit. He said he could order and change it out for $8000. I found that to be very high in my opinion but had no idea what they should cost. I agreed and gave him a check for $723 as a downpayment for the new unit and for the service call. Later that day, a neighbor said her AC had a 10 year warranty and shortly after, my girlfriend found our warranty in a box of papers. It would have been 10 years except I hadn't registered it so it was only 5 years (It's 4 years old). I called the installer whose number I found on the thermostat and told him about this. He said he'd order parts and I called the original company (One Hour) the day after Dean came out and told them about the warranty and to put our entire deal on hold until I found out for sure if the warranty was going to work. Dean called me on 5/7 wondering why I had postponed so I explained it to him also. I did not have his phone number until he called me. He got upset that I wasn't going to allow him to come install his $8000 unit. He said he'd keep the entire $723 which I think is excessive for the work he did. It was my impression that they'd charge $89 to come out and Dean said they do not have an hourly rate. Guess they just make up whatever they want. I think that tech's work shouldn't be more than a couple hundred dollars plus the 89 and I'd like a partial refund from the check I gave Dean. The check was mostly a downpayment for a unit I decided against about 24 hours after I agreed to it. I'm not sure where Dean came from but his company says it works the entire area
